Podcasting Demystified

I've been getting a lot of questions from new podcasters lately. What I discovered is that it’s easy for us to get stuck in a rut and not actually get anything done at all. We end up going nowhere.

In this episode, I share some techniques you can use to get unstuck with your podcast. I also tackle some common problems that happen after you've launched a show.

When it comes to podcasting, I've been there before and I know how confusing it can be. That's why I put together a list of strategies you can use to find clarity and move forward with the message you want to share with your audience.

The pod Cubase podcasting the misdefined. Hi, this is a short recording about what to do when you don't know what to. About podcasting. So if you've always wanted to start a podcast and you're still finding yourself, not on the air, then I want to give you three points that I think might help you. If you're at a place where you are thinking about it, have you been thinking about it? You, you learned about it, but you still haven't started. Let me give you three things to do the first one. If you haven't done so already is to write a mission statement. I use the w. To, to use a W2 form your mission statement. So what's, what are these Ws? It's not a mystery. It's the why? The who? The what? The, when and the, where. So I'm going to start with the why, why do you want to start a podcast? What is your reason for wanting to start a podcast? And this [00:02:00] why is going to bring you back every time you get to the point where you're frustrated, or you don't want to do it anymore because. Be like it, when you go back to your, why you will either decide then that yes, you're going to push forward or definitely you don't want to do this anymore. So in writing your mission statement, start with your why. The second w is the, who, who is your podcast for? Who is your audience and who is that? Avatar is the one person you're doing your podcast for who wants to hear that message? That you are going to talk about on your podcast. So this person could be, you know, depending on your message, maybe a single mom working two jobs with a couple of children and no child support, you know, something like that, something definite. So you want to be able to. Pinpoint that one person so that when you're [00:03:00] recording and when you're researching your topics, you can focus on that one person that avatar might be you, and you can base that off for you. Of course. You'll do your research to know if you know, other people are thinking and what. People's challenges and problems are, but you could be your own avatar. I know I was my own avatar on my other podcast, SoloMoms! Talk. So that is your who, the third w is your, what, what will you be talking about? What subject matter will you be addressing? What message do you want your ideal audience to hear? And so write those down and it will give you. A better idea of the landscape of the podcast that you want to create. The fourth w is when, just on the timeline, when do you want to start the podcast the year, the month, the date, and also how. Will you record and publish and what [00:04:00] day will you publish? So the one is just like a timeline thing that you could include in your mission statement for your podcast. And last one, I'm aware it's not that big a deal, but you could probably mention it. It's the, where, where will you have. The which platform will you publicize it on when you're promoted on just different things, different places where your podcasts will reside and show up on a regular basis. So those are the things I would include in my mission statement. Now, if you think that. Not important. I'm going to show you how in my next point of what to do, when you don't know what to do is record your trailer. If you have a smart phone or you have a mic, either way, record your trailer, and this should be easy, if you did the exercise in numbers. So because your trailer will include the name of your podcast, why you doing it? Who you're doing it for? How often you publish this little things [00:05:00] a three-minute clip of the, your overall vision for your podcast. And so I would do that if I did nothing. It is recorded the trailer. And after you recorded the trailer and you're, you know, you're happy enough with it. I would go to a place like audio jungle and buy a piece of clip, buy a tape of music and make an intro. Or you could go to the five. Are all pork and hire somebody to do it for you. But you could just do a little bit of music at the beginning as your intro. And you may have a call to action that you want to put at the end. Listen to my client, cast me. Or if you have a giveaway, if you have some are the blogging or something like that, or affiliate marketing, and you want to do a call to action for someone to buy it, to contact you and buy something from me, you could do that, but that's your trailer. And maybe you don't want to do too much. Just a trailer, but that is what I would do. The second thing I would do if I didn't know what to do [00:06:00] about my podcast that I wanted to start. The third thing is if you haven't done so already is to create your artwork. Now this again is helped because you did your mission statement. You have all your w set out, you'll know what you want, you know, how you want it to look. And this is where you develop. Colors, your branding and all that you want, want for your podcast. And so you could use a program like Canva, you could use a free program and you don't have to purchase anything to use it and create your podcast. You, you do have to abide by certain measurement. The minimum is 1400 by 1400 pixels are the thing. The maximum is 3000 by 3000 pixels. And so you will need to stay within that guideline to have. Compliant podcast, all work for your podcast. So those are the three things I would do if I didn't know what to do about the fire, but I wanted to start a podcast. Now [00:07:00] let's say you already started, but there are some things going on and you just can't figure it out. Or you're frustrated. I would do. Number one, if you haven't done it, create a mission statement. It will bring you back to center. Provide some clarity. Now, maybe that's not your problem. Maybe your problem is that you have a guest podcast, but you can't find any guests. Then go find gas, join Facebook groups, start a meetup, go to groups like Cora already. And you can also, like I said, Start your own group on Facebook, but the most effective two of the most effective ways platform that I've used to find gas. And I mean, guests just keep coming out of the woodwork kind of guests and good guests too, is to join pod match and matchmaker, FM both are free to start and you do get guests from the beginning. So I would join one of our, both of those platforms and put your bio and put [00:08:00] what you're looking for. You get to link show and tell people you want to talk to them and you are bound to get guests from those two platforms. Now you can also go to Instagram, you know, follow your ideal guests and go there and see who you can find. Now, maybe you have a solar show, not a guest show. And. You're running out the topics. If you do your mission statement, I have no reason to believe you can come up with more topics, but sign up, I'd help a reporter out.com where a reporter, once you sign up to their email list, you'll get questions from different reporters, asking you to help them out with an article they're writing one. It will give you an idea of what porters are talking about. And I would, I would imagine those are trending topics. And number two, it puts you in a place where you can actually help a reporter with a topic that they're probably struggling with are needing help [00:09:00] with writing. And so that gives you two avenues of getting ideas for your show and getting exposure for your show. And so the public.com where you can get ideas of what people are searching for, just search for what people are looking for. Go to Facebook groups when I started them on stock and I still do. I joined a lot of. Single mom, Facebook groups, because I wanted to know what was on the mind of other single moms. And so that helped me to come up with ideas of what to talk about. Although I must admit that the guests kept coming. So I really didn't have. I haven't had to struggle to find, to create an episode because I have so many guests keep coming. But I think that your message that you will have your message that you have for someone is still fresh and you can keep it fresh by finding out [00:10:00] what your audience is looking for. What did they want? What are their problems? What are the questions they're asking? And then you can also scope. What would help your audience? You know, things like if, if working from home is a thing that would benefit, if an episode on working from home, different aspects of working from home, how the podcast and annoys the environment, you know, just different things you can come up with. You can brainstorm and get to getting your message out. So I hope that helped whether you're just starting out or you haven't even started, you will find a way to get your message out because your audience is waiting. Thanks for listening. As you can tell, there are many tools, events. And new ones coming every day that can help you start and grow your podcast.
